Preparing a Feast with a Beast
Last Thanksgiving, Bean was tiny. I think he made that Thanksgiving better for me because he was a real, live, breathing something to be so thankful for. But he couldn’t really do much yet. This year not only was he that something for me to be thankful for, but he was able to actually participate in the Thanksgiving festivities.
He peeled potatoes with me.
He read stories with his Aunt Annie on his Grandmomma’s iPad.
And while we waited for the turkey to cook, he read books with me in his room.
But his favorite part of Thanksgiving was definitely the cooking.
He sat with me on the kitchen counter while I cooked and he ate cookies.
And when I had a little job for him to do, he was 100% committed to helping. Like when Chris’ mom and I were making sausage and cheese balls (my favorite appetizer/breakfast/snack/Southern food ever).
I had a little bit of cheese leftover and I know how much Bean loves to sort things, so I gave him a few cups and let him “help” me by sorting the cheese.
He took his job very seriously.
And it kept him busy for about 20 minutes.
Spending time with family and with Bean in the kitchen made my heart warm. And it made my armpits warm, but I’m fairly certain that was due to either the 80 degree weather outside or the heat in the kitchen from the ovens or the small furnace growing inside of me.
It was so much fun to spend time with Bean doing things that I’ve done for years without him. I remember when Chris and I first started spending holidays together it was so exciting to share traditions and make new ones with him. And with Bean here, it’s that same feeling all over again.
Plus, Bean is just so much fun! He has fun whatever he’s doing – peeling potatoes, sorting cheese, or just eating cookies on the kitchen counter. He has a great time and that makes people around him have a great time. And besides, who wouldn’t have fun eating cookies and sausage balls all day long?

I love your approach her Katie. Instead of looking at Bean as being in the way or a nuisance (as I do) you’ve put him to work and are concentrating on the blessing of having him here. Love it!

I love seeing kids helping out over the holidays – it seems to foster such a sense of family and joy!
Also? What is on grandma’s iPad? I’m so curious! I’m assuming some sort of robot.
