Bean Pool

“Hey, Dad,” said Bean.  “What are you doing?”

“I’m blowing up your swimming pool so that we can play in it this morning,” said Chris.

“See, I use this little pump to blow air into the pool,” said Chris.

“Cooooool,” said Bean.

“Then what do you do?” asked Bean.

“Well, then we test the pool to see if we’ve put enough air into it.”

“Okay,” said Chris.  “I think its ready to go!”

“Oh good!” said Bean.  “I’m ready, too!”

“No, Bean Man!  We have to put the water in it first, silly!”

“Oh, that makes more sense I guess,”  said Bean.  “Uh…can you help me, Dad?  I think I’m stuck.”

“Thanks,” said Bean.

“Now let’s go outside!” said Chris.

“This bathtub is HUGE!” said Bean.

“Hey!  How’d my toys get out here?”

“All this splashing is making me thirsty.  Let me just have a little drink here for a minute…”

“Oh, Bean!” I said.  “Don’t drink that dirty water!”

“It’s not dirty, Mom!” said Bean.  “See?  The dogs are drinking it, too!”

“Those dogs drink out of the toilet, Bean.”

“I know,” said Bean.  “I’m so jealous.”

Well, if Bean’s jealous of the dogs, I’m jealous of him. Tragically, I’ve passed the age where it’s acceptable to fill up a small pool in the front yard and wade around. (Though given my size, it’s really more like squeeze in and sway gently back and forth.) Not that the neighbor’s strange looks stop me, I’m just saying I’m envious of the non-judgemental freedom Bean enjoys.

Baby pools aren’t just for babies. Well, maybe they are – but is that right? This is suppose to be the land of the free, after all.

Aw, so adorable! This makes me want to run to the store and get a pool for my girls. After all, I’m in Texas, its been warm enough for a pool for over a month now!

    Two things:
    1) I love your tumblers. That red gingham plaid pattern is adorable!!
    2) I love when you have Bean’s commentary. It’s hysterical. I give our goldfish commentary, but it just isn’t nearly as adorable.

Too cute! How old was Bean the first time you put him into a swimming pool? My daughter is 5mos old and with Summer approaching I am wondering at what age is appropriate to introduce her to the pool….

    • Nate's Mom

Jennifer – I would have felt comfortable putting Nate in a baby pool (with me right next to him, always) as soon as we transitioned him to baths in the sink. Once he was able to sit up well in the “tub,” I think he would have done fine in a pool. He just went swimming for his first time about a month ago at 10 mos. (we live on the East Coast so he didn’t go swimming earlier)and loved it, but I was surprised at how quickly his teeth started to chatter, even though we were in a heated pool.

  • Nate's Mom

    1) Nate wants an air pump. He loves wind and he didn’t know it was bottled up like that until he saw Bean being blown away.

    2) Nate heard rumor that he got a swimming pool for his birthday next week. If the rumor is true, he can’t wait to compare notes with his buddy, Bean.

Katie, please know I am not telling you this to scare you or freak you out, more as a gentle waring from one snake hater to another. Don’t leave the pool outside when Bean is not in it. If you leave it as is, snakes will hide underneath it in the cool dirt, or if water is left in it, they will get in the pool. If you flip it over, they will slither under it and hang out in the shade. So again, I don’t want to freak you out, just put it inside when it is not in direct use.

Oh my god, that’s terrifying! After the recent Mother’s Day snake experience at Katie’s house it totally gives me the heebie jeebies. Good advice!

  • Diana

Bean is adorable, as usual! I love how the bottom of the pool is “padded”…wow, they’ve come a long way in the last 10 years!

These posts are some of my favorites…you have such a way of capturing his expressions (he’s full of them!) and your narration is always so funny. Happy days. 🙂

It has been months since I have read about the
Bean and he has really grown!!
I am so happy you are all doing fine in FL.

    A few things:
    1. That is the most adorable swimsuit. He must have a pretty spectacular aunt and uncle to get him such stylish swim wear.
    2. They have these pools at PetSmart and I’m getting one for our child ASAP. Poor Sugar is just going to have to act like my baby until JM will give me a real one.
